Veteran Vincentian  educator dies in Canada


Alice Alexander Sutherland passed away at the Rouge Valley Hospital in Scarborough, Ontario, on January 29 after a brief illness.

She was the daughter of Charles Alexander and Rosamond Baynes Alexander of Chauncey, St Vincent and the Grenadines.

Born on September 16, 1922 in Georgetown, {{more}}St Vincent, Mrs Sutherland was 92 years old.

Alice attended the Teachers’ College in Trinidad, after which she started her primary school teaching career at the Buccament Bay Primary School. Known as Alice Alexander at that time, she then transferred to the Kingstown Preparatory School on September 8, 1948.

Alice then left the Prep School in 1958 to become head teacher at the Lowmans Leeward Anglican School, where in addition to teaching, she became very interested and involved in the community.

Alice retired from primary school teaching in 1977, but emerged from retirement five years later, in 1982, to teach at the St Joseph’s Convent, Kingstown. Alice finally retired in 1992, and moved to Canada to live with her son, Bernard, in 1995, where she lived until the time of her passing.

Alice had three children of her own Bernard, Keith and Sherrill. She was also mother to Kingsley Davis her stepson in Toronto, Tony Regisford and Eleen Prescott in St Vincent, Yvette and Rosemond Sutherland, Janet and Patrick Sutherland in New York, Marva Sutherland Davis in New Jersey and Marcia Sutherland in Virginia. She is also survived by grandchildren and two brothers, Clem Wilson and Elroy John of New York.

The family would like to thank all those who have expressed their support and appreciation for the life of Alice.

Viewing of Alice Sutherland’s body will be held on Friday, February 6, 2015, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the McEachnie Funeral Home, 28 Old Kingston Road | Ajax (Pickering Village), ON L1T 2Z7 | 905-428-8488 (

The funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 7, 2015 at 11a.m at the Morningstar Christian Fellowship, 7601 Sheppard Ave. East, Scarborough (West of Morningside). ( Internment to follow at Pine Ridge Memorial Gardens. The repast will be held at a location to be confirmed.

There will be a memorial service in St Vincent and the Grenadines on a date to be announced.
