UWI Open Campus to host Independence lecture

The University of the West Indies Open Campus will host its Annual Independence Lecture on Thursday, October 23 at the Methodist Church Hall and Community Building from 7 p.m.{{more}}

This year’s lecture will be given by Dr Lennox Honeychurch, Caribbean historian and anthropologist, who will speak on the topic “None but ourselves can free our minds: Facing our past to chart our future.”

Dr Honeychurch has had an exceptional career as an historian, archaeologist, artist and journalist, not only in Dominica, but regionally and international. He has published numerous books and academic papers on Dominica’s and Caribbean history, but is better known for his three volume textbooks for Caribbean Secondary Schools, “The Caribbean People”, first published in 1979 with editions in 1980, 1981 and 1995.

Dr Honeychurch is director of restoration projects of heritage sites in Dominica, especially Fort Shirley at the Cabrits National Park. Recently, he was appointed to the Dominica Commission for Reparation for Slavery.

The Open Campus extends an invitation to the general public to attend this lecture as the nation celebrates 35 years of Independence. Patrons are asked to be seated by 6:45 p.m.
