It was a curious scene on Wednesday morning when Ferdinand Marshall received his cheque from the National Lotteries Authority (NLA) for winning an $82,000 Lotto draw. Although he was quite eager to receive his winnings, he was displeased that the media had been asked to cover the event!{{more}}

Marshall, a Layou resident, maintained a pinched expression on his face throughout the handover – only cracking a slight smile when requested to do so during the photograph opportunity.

Anthony Dennie, product development officer at the NLA, in brief remarks, congratulated Marshall on his win, and reminded the public that it was company policy for lottery winners to be publicised.

“I just want to take this opportunity to congratulate you on behalf of the National Lotteries Authorities, and thank you for playing our game,” said Dennie to the elderly lottery winner.

“It is the policy of the National Lotteries Authority to advertise all of our jackpot winners,” he continued. “Today is just a testimony of what we do here.”

Dennie encouraged the public to play the games offered by the NLA, as the proceeds are essential in developing sport and culture locally.

“You’re… giving us the requisite funds to assist with raising much needed revenue to assist in sports and culture here in St Vincent and the Grenadines,” he added. “We continue to do what is necessary to help uplift those two main areas.”

Although Marshall declined to answer any questions from the media, he did inquire of Dennie how long the money would take to clear into his bank account.

The winning ticket was purchased at the Nik Naks convenience shop in Layou. The winning numbers – 04, 23, 27, 28 and 32 – were drawn on Tuesday, August 19.

Following a 10 per cent Government taxation, Marshall will receive a total of $73,800.

Additionally, Dennie encouraged more people to play the new $3 ‘Hot Dice’ scratch card game, and to look out for a new game called ‘Play 4’.

“It’s going to be another exciting game from the National Lotteries Authority!”
