The Barrouallie Technical Institute created history this year when, for the first time, trainees were allowed to sit the CSEC and CCSLC examinations. The institute recorded a 60 per cent pass rate in English A. This is an achievement in itself, since most of the trainees who attend the institute were not afforded the opportunity to complete their secondary level education.{{more}}

Principal of the Institute Pearlette Primus Hannaway also commended the instructor Roslyn Hazlewood, who worked tirelessly to ensure that the students were well prepared for the examination.

Of the 10 students who sat the CCSLC Mathematics exam, one achieved mastery, eight deemed competent and one developing competence.

Some of the successful candidates have now taken their achievement as an incentive to continue to upgrade themselves academically, which is the aim of the institute.

The Barrouallie Technical Institute is one of four technical institutes in SVG which offer training to persons from the age of 16, the opportunity to pursue a career in the technical field for one year, by enrolling in the Caribbean Vocational Qualifications (CVQ) programme. The programmes which are currently being offered include: Food and Beverage Service, Food Preparation, Data Operations, Front Office Operations, Electrical Installation and Housekeeping.

The move to introduce the CSEC/CCSLC was taken so as to arm trainees not only with certification in the technical field, but also to equip them with the basic academic requirement for entry into the world of work.
