Physical work to commence on Leeward Highway

Physical work on the South Leeward Highway Project is expected to begin within the next week and a half.

This update was given by the Minister of Transport and Works Julian Francis, while speaking at a ceremony for the handing over of houses at Vermont last Thursday.{{more}}

“We have awarded the project to Dipcon Engineering for the rehabilitation of the South Leeward Highway. You have been hearing about that for a long time. The contract has been awarded and there was a meeting that was held two days ago (August 12) at my office with all the agencies involved. The equipment for the contractor should be here by weekend and within a week, week and a half, physical works should start on the South Leeward Highway,” Francis said.

Since the contract was signed in May 2014, persons have been observed along the Leeward highway with equipment, taking measurements and making assessments along the roadway.

In his update, the minister also revealed that patching of potholes along the Leeward road will be carried out by the Roads, Buildings and General Services Authority, even when the rehabilitation project is started.

Francis stated that this was for the comfort of road users.

“That highway will deteriorate very quickly over the next couple of months. We will still be patching the potholes on it, even though you have $25 million to spend on it because it’s going to take 21 months to finish that highway and we can’t let those potholes that are there continue to expand,” he said.(BK)
