“The project has been planned for over 10 years and we are extremely excited to be able to finally make it happen in 2014,” the group has announced.

It said the Gomea tree was selected and cut from deep in the forest, then transported to the Kingstown HQ, where the canoe is now under construction

“When completed, the pirogue will be approximately 23 ft long by 3 ft wide and will be able to transport up to 20 warriors at pace,” the group said.

The Kalinago Tribe of SVG is encouraging all Vincentians to visit them in Kingstown during 2014 and share in this unprecedented and historic cultural event.

“We have already had great interest from local schools in Kingstown, some of which have already visited us,” they said.

Guided tours are available throughout the year every Tuesday, Wedesday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Teacher accompanied schoolchildren are free.

The group said photo opportunities are available with the chiefs. Interactive games are also available.

Media day is today Tuesday, 25th March at 10 a.m., with refreshments.
