This week, a sum of EC$64,886.53 was handed over to Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves, by general manager of the National Broadcasting Corporation, Corletha Ollivierre.

Ollivierre noted that the funds were the fruits of a collaborative radiothon that was held by all radio stations in the country. She further stated that this was the second installment to be paid to the Government.

“It is my pleasure, on behalf of the public, whose money it is we were entrusted with, to hand over a cheque of $64,886.53, which represents the balance as of today (Wednesday) in the account, SVG Relief 2013. That account was opened in the wake of the devastating floods on Christmas Eve into Christmas Day, occasioned by the trough that affected us,” the manager explained.

She added that NBC has partnered with radio stations on several occasions to raise funds to aid in relief efforts, whenever it is necessary. Ollivierre further noted that this was done in the wake of tropical storms, Ivan and Tomas.

“We are pleased on behalf of the stations that took part and the public which contributed their various sums,” she said.

Before officially receiving the cheque, Gonsalves expressed gratitude to the management, board of directors and staff of NBC.

While noting that aid has poured in both regionally and internationally, the Prime Minister declared that the radiothon was “a very good national gesture.”

He also indicated that he will ensure that the funds are deposited into an account, which is attached to the Accountant General’s office.

The first sum of money that was handed over to the government by NBC, was EC$125,000. (BK)
