An official opening ceremony was held on Wednesday for the ALTCOS Optimum Wellness Centre, which is located in Campden Park.

Under the motto, “Wholeness for the body, mind and spirit”, the centre serves as an advocate of healthy lifestyles and wellness by providing a variety of services.

These services include blood sugar, blood pressure and weight checks, infrared sauna detox, foot detox, body system analysis, ozone therapy, violet ray therapy, as well as dietary and spiritual counselling.

During the official ceremony, managing director Sylvia Gould shared the story behind her business.

Gould, who has had an extensive career in nursing, stated that she had always dreamed of opening a consultancy business.

The managing director explained that she made her dream a reality in 2007 when she registered the ALTCOS; Abundant Life, Training and Consultancy Services under directives from God.

“In 2007, I registered the business ALTCOS and I chose the term ‘abundant life’ because it’s a concept that the Lord has given to us. He has come to give us life and life abundant,” Gould said.

Following in the footsteps of Bertril Baird, a pastor based in Trinidad, Gould received her training and began making moves to establish her wellness centre in St Vincent and the Grenadines.

“We know that people are dissatisfied with the medical services they are receiving,” Gould said. “It seems like you keep going to the doctor for the same things and the same thing, and the same thing. The pharmaceutical companies want their drugs to sell”.

The managing director however, stressed that her wellness centre was not designed to rule out visits to the doctor, but rather to promote healthy lifestyles within the country.

Former West Indies wicketkeeper Michael Findlay delivered the feature address at the opening on Tuesday.

He stated that wellness is generally used to mean a healthy balance of mind, body and spirit that results in an overall feeling of well-being and noted that the wellness centre is a welcome addition to the country, as it will bring “a new dimension to the meaning of wellness, here in St Vincent and the Grenadines and will add value to the lives of thousands of people”.

Findlay congratulated Gould and her team for conceiving the idea and expressed faith that the business will blossom, where foreigners and Vincentians alike will be seeking the services.

The ALTCOS Optimum Wellness Centre hopes to add more services to their roster in the near future.

These include massages, oils and nutritional supplements and consistent training and education to the public.

Gould highlighted that she has been putting a lot into getting her business off the ground, and is seeking sponsorship from anyone who is interested in assisting.

“My husband and I…we have been putting basically all of our finances to make sure that this gets going because we believe that it is God’s will for us. We do not have a lot of the stuff that we need…we need some tables, we need chairs, we need quite a few equipment so we are looking for some sponsors,” she said.

The first public event to be hosted by the wellness centre will take place today at the Peace Memorial Hall from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Demonstrations and education about various health and wellness areas will be available.(BK)
