Perez, who left St Vincent and the Grenadines to return to his native Cuba in April this year, took up a post as technical adviser to the IADC one week ago.

Chief executive officer of the IADC Dr Rudy Matthias confirmed Perez’s return to SEARCHLIGHT yesterday. Matthias said Perez’s private contract with the IADC began on September 16 and will run until the completion of the construction of the international airport at Argyle.

Perez, who is also known as “The Professor” previously worked with the IADC as a consultant engineer under a bilateral arrangement of his government with the government of St Vincent and the Grenadines.

After Perez’s departure earlier this year, it had been rumoured that he had left because of a disagreement with Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves. This rumour was dispelled by the Prime Minister in an address to Parliament on May 27.

“We were all satisfied with him,” Gonsalves said of the man who, since the commencement of construction of the airport, has been in charge of the airside works.

Gonsalves explained that, based on internal rules with the Cuban state-owned company, Perez had stayed in SVG longer than is normally the case. He added that Perez was coming close to retirement, and needed to return to Cuba to finalize all the relevant retirement arrangements.

When Perez left the state in April, a replacement was sent by the Cuban government.

Gonsalves, however, also said at that time that Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parilla had indicated that once Perez had completed what was needed to be done in relation to his retirement, he could be rehired.
