Public invited to lecture on abolition of slavery at Methodist Church Hall

The University of the West Indies Open Campus will host a public lecture on Tuesday, August 20th at the Methodist Church Hall from 7 p.m, in commemoration of the 175th anniversary of the abolition of slavery in the English speaking Caribbean.{{more}}

Pro Vice Chancellor and principal of the Cave Hill Campus of the University of the West Indies Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, will deliver the lecture on the title of his latest book, “Britain’s Black Debt: Reparations for Caribbean Slavery and Native Genocide.”

Professor Beckles. is one of the Caribbean’s leading writers and intellectuals on the subjects of slavery, emancipation and reparations, having published several academic books including: Liberties Lost: The Native Caribbean and Slave Societies; White Servitude and Black Slavery in Barbados 1627-1715; Centering Woman: Gender Discourses in Caribbean Slave Society; and; Natural Rebels: A History of Enslaved Black Women in the Caribbean.

At the end of the lecture, Professor Beckles will be available to sign copies of his book.

The Open Campus extends an invitation to the general public to attend the lecture.

Patrons are asked to be seated by 6:45 p.m.
