The workshop examined the critical continual role parents play in the lives of their children; looked at the issues involved in single parenting and teen parenting; and at appropriate responses to such issues.

The main presenter was Celoy Nichols, health educator in the Ministry of Health, while the students in training at the Vinsave Child Development Centre dramatized the three styles of parenting, as outlined by “Diana Baumrind”.

The participants included parents and teachers from Early Childhood Centres where Vinsave students are placed, as well as parents, teachers and members of the Byesave Pre-school and Women’s Group. The participants were also engaged in group sessions to examine the issues in parenting.

Remarks were delivered by director of Vinsave, Janice Fraser and Gwenneth Cambridge, senior education officer – Early Childhood Education, in the Ministry of Education.

At the end of the session, participants expressed the need for more parenting seminars by other organizations; that existing programmes for young people and families should be strengthened; and Family Life Education be taught in all schools.

VINSAVE pledged to continue to deliver such workshops in various communities, as part of its programmes.
