In a November 7 letter to Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves, Taiwan President, Ma Ying-jeou wrote:

“On behalf of the Government and people of the Republic of China, I would like to express my appreciation for the statement you made during the General Debate of the United Nations General Assembly this year, firmly backing our meaningful participation in UN specialized agencies and recognizing our efforts and contributions to promoting regional peace in East Asia.

“I look forward to your country’s continued support for our cause, so that we might soon fulfill the aspirations of our people to enjoy meaningful participation in the UN system,” it continued.

On September 28, Gonsalves, in his address to the General Assembly, called for Taiwan, which has not been recognized by the United Nations since 1971, to be permitted to participate in the work of various agencies of the UN.

Gonsalves visited the country in May this year for Ma’s second term inauguration.

The letter went on to reiterate Taiwan’s commitment to furthering relations and cooperation between the two countries, for their welfare and sustained development.

“Saint Vincent and the Grenadines has long been our staunch ally and has spoken for us at international venues. Our countries enjoy close and frequent exchanges,” Ma wrote. (JJ)
