On November 7, the units held a fire awareness programme at the Hope Bible Church, Ottley Hall.

Sergeant Charles Adams of the Fire Department, facilitating the event, informed the gathering about the methods by which heat is transferred, namely conduction, convection and radiation, as well as the classes of fire. He also used the opportunity to sensitize the audience about various methods that they can use to bring a fire under control.

He said if an individual is trapped in a burning house, if possible, that person should wrap a wet sheet around his or her body and run to the exit. As the person exits the building, the next step is to roll on the ground until the fire is put out. Sergeant Adams also suggested using a fire extinguisher, dry chemical, dry powder, or water to put out a fire. He said in the event that there is an electrical fire, a dry piece of stick should be used to disconnect the electrical breaker.

Commissioner of Police Keith Miller told the residents of Ottley Hall that the police are making an effort to help them.

“We are not here to segregate or disassociate from anyone. Our job is to associate with everyone….We are here to ensure that you are safe where you live,” said COP Miller.

Miller told the teenagers and children that they should be able to grow and develop in peace, an opportunity that others across the country have.

“We do not want labels on any community….We want every Vincentian to feel proud to associate with any district, including Ottley Hall. Help to build a name for Ottley Hall,” Miller said.

The event was also attended by Sergeant Cecile McMaster, National Coordinator of the Royal St Vincent and the Grenadines Police Youth Clubs; Inspector of Police Hawkins Nanton, Deputy Head of the Police Public Relations Department and Corporal McKenzie of the Special Services Unit.
