During his independence address to the nation on October 26, Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves announced that the period of duty free entry of barrels to this country will begin on November 12.

Charmaine Tappin John, Manager Human Resources and Corporate Affairs at the Port, told SEARCHLIGHT on Wednesday that although they expect a busy period as usual, they are aware that this season could be negatively affected by the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy in the United States.

“A lot of the barrels and personal effects come from the tri-state area in the US which was affected by the hurricane. We will wait to see if that does in fact affect the operation. However, over the past few years we have seen an increase in barrels coming from other parts as well, such as the Virgin Islands and Canada,” Tappin John said.

She, however, said all necessary arrangements will be put in place to “accommodate any increase in activity during this period.”

The period of duty free entry will end on December 31.
