The senior citizens of this nation were pampered to perfection as an array of free services were offered, including the treatment, plaiting and relaxing of hair, as well as manicures and pedicures.

When SEARCHLIGHT visited the hair studio, it was evident that the golden girls of the country are not the only ones to make use of the special day, as sitting between two females, was Philmore Morris.

“I came for a manicure and a pedicure,” he said.

Morris stated that it was not his first time and he enjoyed the services immensely.

“It’s a good thing,” Morris said. “I’ve only missed one time.”

Dorothea Dickson, a lively Mt Pleasant resident, arrived at Suzanne’s Hair Studio to have her hair shampooed and treated. In addition to enjoying the independence special every year, Dickson is a regular customer at the salon.

“I think it is a good thing,” she remarked.

“She [Suzanne] has been giving back you know, but this time, to me, it is sort of witnessing to the goodness of God because God is good and when God is good, you must give back to show the goodness of God to others.”

Sitting quietly and patiently in a corner was first time customer at the independence special, Stella Jackson. The proud 84-year-old hoped to have her hair treated and to enjoy a manicure and pedicure.

Jackson heard of the event through her church and from a family member, and praises the efforts of the establishment.

Though early in the day, Paula Myers, a staff member, had already shampooed no fewer than five senior citizens. Myers stated that she enjoys being a part of the event and that it is a nice occasion for senior citizens to be pampered, especially in hard economic times.

Suzanne Goodluck, owner of the studio, was not present at the time of SEARCHLIGHT’s visit, however her friend, Akeliah Rose was pleased to fill in and comment.

“It’s beneficial to senior citizens in the area, you feel like you’re giving back to the community so it’s something that I support,” Rose said.

Suzanne’s Hair Studio is located on the first floor of Medix Pharmacy Building on Grenville Street.

This is the twelveth year the studio has offered this free service to senior citizens as an independence gift.
