Colonarie to have EC$3 million bridge

After originally being built 51 years ago, the Colonarie Bridge is being reconstructed at a cost of EC $3 million.{{more}}

Funding for the project is being provided by the Government of St Vincent and the Grenadines and the Republic of China on Taiwan.

EdgHill Associates (Caribbean) Ltd, a Barbadian construction company, are the contractors.

The new bridge, according to Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves, is designed to last for another 75 years, after completion.

“It’s going to be much stronger than this. As you see, this one was built the old way, with all the casting of the concrete. We’re going to bring in particular concrete slabs which have been tested in very controlled circumstances which would last much longer, the experts say,” Gonsalves said last Friday during a tour of the project.

The bridge was originally supposed to have been rebuilt as part of the rehabilitation of the Windward Highway project. Gonsalves, however, noted that the then contractor was instructed to act more swiftly on other aspects of the highway and the bridge was omitted from that project.

The reconstruction process began earlier this month and is expected to be completed in six months.(AA)
