The importance of opposition leader Arnhim Eustace visiting Taiwan, one of this country’s closest allies, is a matter for the Asian nation to decide.{{more}}

“If it is important that I visit Taiwan? That is a matter for Taiwan. Taiwan has not invited me to visit their country. I can’t presume that as Leader of the Opposition I can just go to Taiwan. I can go as a tourist,” Eustace said in response to a question at a press conference on Wednesday.

Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves said earlier this month that Eustace has never visited Taiwan.

SEARCHLIGHT understands that Taiwan has invited prominent members of both political parties here to visit the country every year, but the opposition has not accepted the offer over the past three years.

Gonsalves visited Taiwan when he was an opposition legislator.

Eustace also did not attend Taiwan’s national day celebration in Kingstown on October 8.

“I was invited. I chose not to go,” Eustace said at the press conference, adding that he would not give his reasons for not going.
