This fund raising initiative was part of the school’s ongoing commitment to Fairtrade, following a presentation to students from Dr Christopher Stange of the Consulate of St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) in Comber, on Caribbean Windward Islands Fairtrade bananas.

Alison Gibson delivered £100 to Dr Christopher Stange, who thanked her for the valued contribution and the link created with St Vincent.

Dr Stange added: “It is wonderful to have children learn about items we eat daily, which are not produced locally, and to ensure those farmers in the developing world thousands of miles away are guaranteed a fair price for their efforts. The banana industry in St Vincent has had severe setbacks with the recent passage of Hurricane Tomas, Moko Disease and Black Sigatoka.”

The SVG Consulate in Comber is working with other groups in Northern Ireland to finalise a combined fertilizer fund ($5000.00 E.C.), to assist those farmers, which will be officially distributed through the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Agriculture in St Vincent.
