At a press conference on Tuesday, January 31, Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves announced that part of the one million dollar donation had been received, with the rest to follow shortly.

“I just got from the officials here in St Vincent and the Grenadines, the banking information; the first tranche of money for US$537,559.35; the second tranche is going to come within a couple weeks time. Over a million EC dollars to buy some trucks and so on, which is what I said is one of the reasons I was going; not the only one.”

On January 4, Dr Gonsalves had revealed in another press conference that the former Soviet state had committed to making a contribution for the purchasing of vehicles, for work on the Argyle airport project.

He visited Georgia, Azerbaijan, Palestine and London in late December last year.

According to the Prime Minister, Azerbaijan, the other Eastern European country visited, had also committed to contributing to this country’s airport development.

Dr Gonsalves said that he is criticized for his travel abroad, but when he does so, he is looking for money and to ‘enhance the influence of St Vincent and the Grenadines’.
