Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves, in his presentation of the Estimates in the House on Tuesday, December 13, made the announcement, saying that money has already been budgeted to facilitate the establishment of the embassy.

“Venezuela is a very important partner for the government with regard to trade and economic matters, and we will be in 2012 doing even more serious work with Venezuela, particularly on the trading regime of the Petro Caribe arrangement,” Gonsalves said.

According to the prime minister, a series of agricultural items has already been identified with the intent to begin selling produce to Venezuela.

He added that the two countries were also looking at trading services such as tourism and in relation to the St Vincent and the Grenadines Community College, the teaching of English.

These proposed trading arrangements warrant someone to be on the ground Gonsalves contended.

He said that Venezuela has agreed to provide office space and the local authorities were working on the modalities.

It is expected that the Embassy will be officially opened by the end of the first half of next year, the prime minister said. (DD)
