Union Island students raise their hats to Reading

The annual Literacy Week, under the theme “Hats off to Reading”, took place on Union Island during the week November 21 to 25.{{more}}

Both primary schools on the island, the Mary Hutchinson Primary and the Stephanie Browne Primary, participated in the activity, which is held by the Ministry of Education to emphasize the importance of Reading.

Pupils of the schools visited pre-schools, spoke about the importance of Reading, and particpated in story telling, drama and a Reading competition.

The Mary Hutchinson Primary and the Stephanie Brown Primary came together for a Joint March and Rally on Friday, November 25. Several well decorated hats and sashes were on display and carried messages on the importance of Reading.

The Rally which followed the March was held at the Ashton Hard Court. Several students took part in short plays, singing and reading. The keynote address was delivered by Sandra Alexander, a retired teacher and reading specialist, who stressed the importance of Reading. She also gave her personal experiences on Reading and Literacy.(SG)
