SVG Calypso Association AGM – November 19, 2011

The Executive of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Calypso Association has announced that the Annual General Meeting of the SVG Calypso Association will be held on Saturday,{{more}} November 19, 2011, at the SVG Red Cross Society Conference Room. The meeting will commence at 9:30 am.

According to the President of the SVG Calypso Association, Hassan Kennedy, the Executive of the Association has been involved in the detailed planning of this event for over a month.

Kennedy says: “The Annual General meeting of the Calypso Association organisation is a critical event as it is a time for the general membership of the organisation to receive reports on the performance of the organisation; assess the efficiency and functioning of the organisation and its affiliates – the Tents, as well as its elected leadership. It is also the time when the broad membership agrees on the broad strategies to be employed to chart the way forward for the Association. The AGM provides the opportunity for all members of the Association to exercise their democratic rights and elect persons to guide and lead the organisation for the next year”.

The President says that while he is pleased with some of the improvements in the artform, as exhibited during the 2011 carnival season, a great deal needs to be done to energise the Association and enhance the artform. He, therefore, hopes that the artistes will take the AGM seriously and use it as a spring board to take the Association to higher heights.

It is expected that over sixty calypsonians and soca artistes, drawn mainly from the Graduates Calypso tent, the Mesopotamia Calypso tent, the On- Tour Calypso tent and the Upstage Xperience Tent, will participate in the AGM. The New York-Based Dynamites Calypso tent will have very limited representation.

The highlight of the meeting is expected to be the elections of officers to serve on the new Executive, as some members of the Association have already indicated in the press and elsewhere, their intention to offer themselves as candidates for the various positions on the Executive.
