Gonsalves cited this country’s independence celebrations as the reason for his decision.

“I have never left the country at any independence unless it is of a particular nature that compels me to leave,” he explained.

“We are grateful to the Australian government where the conference is being hosted; they helped after Tomas,” Gonsalves said, adding that he had made an initial promise to be there.

But in his absence, the prime minister said that he has asked this country’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom Cenio Lewis to represent the country at the general meeting and Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda Baldwin Spencer to represent this country at the caucus which is to be attended by heads of government only.

The prime minister, however, said that he has received an invitation to attend church in Bethlehem on Christmas Day and that he was making serious considerations about taking up the offer.
