Nine to battle for Courts Reading Crown

Nine primary school students will vie for the opportunity to represent St. Vincent and the Grenadines in the regional finals of the Courts OECS Primary Schools Reading competition, which is scheduled to take place later this month in St. Kitts.{{more}} One of the students will first have to take the number one spot in the local finals of the competition, which is scheduled to be held on October 14, at the East Caribbean Central Bank Conference Room in Kingstown. The finalists were selected following the zonal preliminary competition which took place over the past two weeks and saw 52 of the 66 primary schools participating. The nine students with the highest overall scores were selected for the finals, and features four from the Kingstown zone, and one each from South Leeward, North Leeward, Marriaqua, Union and Calliaqua zones.

The nine hopefuls are Solange Compton of the Kingstown Preparatory School, Ranique Peters of the Belair Government, Avin Cruickshank from the Lowmans Leeward Anglican, Ashleigh Scott of St. Mary’s R.C, Ellean Bailey of the Windsor Primary, Shennelia Davis of the Richland Park Givernment, Akeem Josephs from Lodge Village Government, Lydia Spring of the Fitz Hughes Government and Orisanna Baynes of the Park Hill Government School.

The winner will receive a prize of $2,000, and the school he or she is representing will also get $2,000. The winner will also be given the opportunity to read a segment of news on SVG TV and represent St. Vincent and the Grenadines at the regional finals in St. Kitts. The second placed student and school will win $1000 each, with third place receiving $750. Fourth and fifth places will receive $500.

All nine finalists will be given savings accounts, compliments CIBC First Caribbean International Bank. They will also receive books compliments Jujube Book store and Acute Cosmetics and Searchlight newspaper. The top three students will receive dental care packages, compliments Dental Care dental clinic.

In the regional finals, the winner receives cash and other prizes, including a laptop computer.
