It is the first set of classes to be in operation at the Glen Adult Education Centre since it was refurbished under SPA 2003 and officially opened at the end of 2010.

Thirty participants are enrolled in the programme, and they will go through six months of instructions and practical preparation for an exam. Besides carpentry, which will be done up to CSEC level, participants will be exposed to life skills sessions, English, Integrated Science, Mathematics and Information Technology.

There have been numerous requests for further programmes of this nature since the ACE division began its crusade and outreach programme to communities. Similar programmes which were done were not at the CSEC level. The workforce demands also require skilled personnel in the construction industry. What is even more a requirement is certification of skilled individuals as proof of competence.

The Community of Glen and the town of Barrouallie both have available accommodation for such a programme and have been targeted.

Director of the Adult and Continuing Education Division Frances Clarke Palmer encouraged the participants to focus and pursue the journey to the end. She also impressed upon them the importance of thinking of ways to make themselves productive, educated and employable. These statements were delivered at the commencement of classes at Glen on Monday, September 19, 2011.
