Burgin, Murphy among top performers for SVGS and GHS

Shane Burgin, a former student of the St. Vincent Grammar School and Shontell Murphy, a former student of the Girls’ High School,{{more}} both returned outstanding performances in the 2011 Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate exams.

Murphy, who is in Canada on vacation, gained 10 grade one passes, and one grade two. Seven of Murphy’s grade one passes were distinctions. Her grade one passes were in Biology, Caribbean History, Chemistry, English A, English B, French, Information Technology, Mathematics, Physics and Principles of Business. She received a grade two in Geography.

Murphy is a resident of Queen’s Drive and the daughter of Alietha Davis and Edwin Murphy.

“It was like the fourth of July! A blast of different emotions erupted in me!” said Murphy, describing her reaction when she learned of her results.

She said despite being confident that she would do well, she was overwhelmed when the reality confronted her. She is also extremely pleased at having made her family as proud as they are.

The 17-year-old will take courses in Math, Biology and Chemistry when she commences studies at the Community College in September. She hopes one day to become a physician, most likely specializing in gynaecology.

Burgin, also overseas on vacation, amassed passes in 11 subjects, gaining a grade one for each, 8 of those ones being distinctions. Son to Judith Burgin and Kenville Quashie, he was the best business student from the Grammar School and reportedly, the first male student to receive a distinction in Food and Nutrition.
