Palestinians solicit SVG’s support in their bid for UN recognition

Palestinian Foreign Minister Dr. Raid Malki, made an official visit to St. Vincent and the Grenadines on Friday, August 5, 2011.{{more}}

The Foreign Minister held talks with Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves and Foreign Affairs Minister Dr. Douglas Slater, at Cabinet Room.

Dr. Malki said that the purpose of the visit to the region is to solicit support in the Palestinian’s bid to the United Nations General Assembly to be recognized as an independent state. Dr. Malki said that his Government highly appreciates the support of the Government and People of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. According to Malki, the creation of an independent Palestine will bring self-determination and freedom to the Palestinian people.

The Minister and his team have made several visits to other CARICOM countries asking for support in the creation of an independent Palestinian state. Likewise, the Palestinian delegation is soliciting the support of St. Vincent and the Grenadines in their bid to the United Nations.

According to Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Douglas Slater, the Government is supporting Palestine’s bid to be recognized as an independent state.

The delegation also includes the Venezuelan Ambassador to Palestine. The delegation left the State today for Cuba.

The recognition of Palestine as an independent state will come up for discussion at the next United Nations meeting in September.
