Jevon Bynoe is the Student of the Year at the Thomas Saunders Secondary School for 2011.{{more}}

Bynoe received his award at the school’s second Graduation and Prize giving ceremony, which took place at the Kingstown Methodist Church on Thursday June 16, 2011.

Bynoe was also awarded for his excellence in English B, Geography and Integrated Science.

The ceremony, held under the theme: “Even the most distant dream can be realized with determination and persistence,” also saw other students receiving awards for excellence in sports and academics. Teachers were also awarded for their invaluable service to the institution.

Featured speaker Luke Browne encouraged the graduates to dream big, adding that the most distant dream can be achieved. He further encouraged students to reflect on the sacrifices made by their parents, who have sacrificed a lot in order to make sure that they are successful in their education.

Browne also commended the school on its many achievement in sports and education, urging them to continue to excel in these areas.

Also extending congratulations, Senior Education Officer in the Ministry of Education Carlton Hall congratulated the staff and principal of the school for their efforts in educating the students.

Principal John Renton giving the principal’s report, outlined the school’s achievements, from starting out as a small institution to becoming one of the best secondary schools in the country. He mentioned of the efforts of the teachers who had to sacrifice and work hard to ensure that students were well prepared for their CXC/CSEC Examinations.

The Student of the Year, extending congratulations to his fellow graduates, reminisced on the fun times that they shared at the institution, reminding them to persevere and follow their dreams.

The ceremony also featured performances from the talented students at the institution including renditions of songs and poetry. The graduates also performed a fitting graduation song: “Never Give Up.” Ninety-nine fifth form students graduated.

Other special awards were given to Valedictorian Shernelle Browne and Renrick Edwards who received the Sports Personality of the Year.

The Most Disciplined Student was Zavanda Timm, while Shonnell Abbott received the award for being the Student with the Most Sense of Responsibility.

Subject awards were also given to students who performed in an exemplary manner during the school term, while awards of special recognition were given to teachers and guests at the graduation ceremony. (OS)
