This was disclosed by Minster of Agriculture Forestry, Fisheries and Rural Transformation Montgomery Daniel as he addressed the public during the Fisherman Day celebrations on Monday, June 13, 2011, at the Calliaqua Playing Field.

Daniel stated that the European Union inspection team, which is set to arrive in August or September, will assess the fishing industry’s readiness to export fish to European countries.

“One of our failures is the number of vendors who are vending immediately in front of the fisheries complex” Daniel said. “This vending operation will certainly have to be relocated if we are to pass the test of the European Union” he added.

He further stated that the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries plans to work with the Ministry of Urban Development to find a solution to the problem.

Minister of Urban Development Julian Francis during a public meeting with vendors on June 2, 2011, stated that he wanted the town to be cleaned up by June 24. Francis also stated that he hopes to solve the problem of the congestion of vendors on the streets as well as the stalls and benches used by the vendors.

Daniel, also commenting on several improvements in the fishing industry, also stated that the Ministry continues to offer training for several stakeholders within the industry. He added, however, that the ministry’s biggest disappointment is the management of the fishing facilities. Daniel stated that the ministry is in the process of restructuring the management of the facilities.

Daniel also encouraged the fishermen to acquire the necessary tools to advance their businesses, including a good vessel and a good crew which can give fishermen a brand name.

This year’s Fisherman Day’s activities saw the participation of 145 fishers. The theme of Fisherman’s Month was “Striving for Better Quality within the Fishing Industry.” The slogan was “Quality Fish Healthier Dish.”(OS)
