President of CHLP Fleurisia Horne said her organization has much to celebrate, as they have received the 2010 National Youth Award for “Community Group of the Year” and were regional top performers for 2009 and 2010 from among 11 countries.

Horne said that her group has been effective because they have been keeping with the organization’s aim to encourage young people to be more active.

She explained that the project was originally initiated in the region in 2000, by the Organization of Caribbean Administrators of Sports and Physical Education, the Caribbean Netball Association and the Commonwealth Games of Canada under the slogan “Your Life, Your Health, Make it Right.” Its head office is in Barbados.

Horne expounded that when sports was used as part of the socialization process, not only would participants become healthier, but they would also develop other attributes, such as team work, communication and leadership skills.

The CHLP President explained that her group has been volunteering their weekends by helping other youngsters lead more active lives at the Netball Centre at New Montrose and at the Arnos Vale Sporting Complex at the “Sports for Life Programme” and pledged that CHLP SVG would continue to encourage other youngsters, aged14-25 years, to live healthy through physical activity.
