The school kicked off the Ministry of Education coordinated programme yesterday, Monday, January 24, at the school’s compound at Richmond Hill, with a programme of activities, which included poems, speeches and drumming exercises by students.

Suzette Abbott-King, Literacy Coordinator at the school, who declared the week of activities open, highlighted what would be taking place under the theme “Reading and Writing Stimulate the Mind. Through Literacy, We all Can Shine.”

Apart from the opening ceremony, the opening day featured a book fair, which include Jujube Book Store, Gaymes Book Store, The Adventist Book Store and the Teachers Credit Union Book store, showcasing a number of literature and text books.

Today, Tuesday, January 25, the students will have a reading day, during which they will be engaged in a reading competition. They will also make a visit to the paediatric ward of the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital, where they will read to patients there.

Wednesday will see the writing competition and a workshop for parents with reading challenges, and on Thursday, there will be an impromptu speech competition and visits to the Kingstown Public Library.

The week of activities will culminate with a march to the New Testament Church of God at Wilson Hill, which will be followed by a rally and distribution of prizes.

Yesterday’s launch also heard addresses from Hannah Browne, Curriculum Officer with responsibility for language, literacy and communication, as well as Headteacher of the school Hyacinth Harry.(JJ)
