This year, the Young Leaders are being challenged to think “Beyond the Surface,” and to fully explore this topic with a view to developing solutions to the treatment of drinking water, industrial water, sewerage or waste water. They are also being encouraged to manage water resources and see how they can influence the management of irrigation and the water table. The Young Leaders will also explore new approaches that can be implemented within their communities and see whether there are regional issues that they can impact and offer solutions.

More than two thirds of the Earth’s surface is covered by water and the human body consists of 75% of it. Water is critical to human survival and the increasing world population has put fresh water sources in serious danger. Here in the Caribbean agricultural experts have identified water as one of the major challenges with which this sector will have to contend, in the not too distant future.

The Young Leaders Programme is aimed at helping young people to develop leadership skills and appreciate the value of teamwork in the pursuit of common goals; to foster care for their community and the environment; to promote thrift toward strengthening the will social, moral and economic well being of communities and to implement sustainable programmes that will have meaningful and wide ranging impact.

The programme is conducted in seven Caribbean territories in which RBTT operates. St. Vincent and the Grenadines has been participating for the last thirteen years, with last year’s winner being the St. Vincent Grammar School.
