Lewis receives Honorary Degree of Master of Education

The University of the West of England (UWE) has awarded an Honorary Degree of Master of Education to Lennox O’Reilly Augustus Lewis, in recognition of his contribution and standing in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.{{more}}

He also received the degree for his role as a powerful advocate for the University, and the ways in which he has demonstrated commitment to, and engagement with, individual staff and students.

The Honorary Degree was conferred at the Awards Ceremony of the School of Education yesterday, at Bristol Cathedral, United Kingdom.

Lewis was born in September 1944, in Georgetown. He was educated in this country, Scotland and London, completing a Teacher’s Certificate at the Teachers’ College here in 1969, a Bachelor’s in Education Studies at the University of Stirling in 1988, and a Certificate in Education Inspection and Supervision, at the University of London, in 1993.

In the 19 years between 1971 and 1990, he served as the principal of seven primary schools: Union Methodist, Biabou Methodist, South Rivers Methodist, Richland Park Government, Richmond Hill Government, Kingstown Preparatory, and the C.W. Prescod Primary School.

In 1990, Lewis took up the position of Senior Education Officer in the Ministry of Education. He performed this role until 1999, holding responsibility for primary education, school inspection, planning, conducting training for teachers and head teachers and representing the Ministry at various events. He subsequently served as co-ordinator for the Ministry’s In-Service Teacher Training Programme in 2006. For the past two years he has been a member of the Education Advisory Board here.

Since 2007, Lewis has been involved in a UWE Leadership and Management Project, done in conjunction with the Government of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The project was officially launched on March 29, 2007. As part of this project Lewis visited UWE’s Faculty of Education and local schools in Bristol, in 2007. In 2007-2008 he held the post of Deputy Team Leader for the UWE Education Management Degree for Primary Principals, Deputy Principals and Senior Teachers in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Then, in 2009-10, he served as Deputy Team Leader for the UWE Post-Graduate Diploma for Primary and Secondary Principals in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Lewis is also a fully accredited local preacher for the Methodist Church.
