The guitar man, the feisty girl and the charmer were just some of the personalities that sprung to life as senior citizens of Bequia danced to the music of The String Band, as they celebrated the Bequia Senior Citizens fun day staged by the National Insurance Services (NIS).{{more}}

The event was held at the Clive Tannis Playing Field on Thursday, November 11.

The event featured activities such as rounder’s, cricket, dominoes, cards, and a session of exercise and fitness.

The seniors also enjoyed entertainment from The String Band, and sang along to folk tunes, rendered by the band.

The highlight of the session, was 96-year-old, Vesta Bunyon, who danced along heartily to several of the renditions done by the string band, as she did a solo routine with one of the songs.

In an interview with SEARCHLIGHT, Bunyon, who cleverly said that her age was “88+8”, disclosed that she has lived in Bequia all her life. She explained that when she was younger, she used to make quilts for people on Bequia as well as on mainland St. Vincent.

Bunyon, whose only companion is her dog, Flash, stated that she is very involved in sporting activities; she even joined fellow seniors in a game of cricket and rounder’s at the event. “Anything…you bring it, I dey in it,” Bunyon said about her involvement in sports and other activities.

“People when they age, they let their age take them over,” Buynon said, adding that people should not let age stop them from having fun, and being active.

The event also featured remarks by several health officials including family nurse practitioner Cherylyn Glynn, who outlined activities for the diabetic week; Health Nursing Supervisor Sister Adorna Peters and a National Insurance Services representative.

Remarks were also made by Parliamentary Representative for the North Grenadines Dr. Godwin Friday who encouraged the seniors to have their blood pressure and sugar levels check regularly and to keep active however they can.
