The RIDU has designated the month of May OECS Treaty Awareness month under the theme “OECS Economic Union – Integrate for a brighter future”.

The Unit will be carrying out a series of public awareness campaigns on the mainland and in the Grenadines. These include: visits to all secondary schools in the country and a two-day workshop targeting Social Studies teachers at the primary level. Additionally, there will be a series of radio discussions and television appearances from members of the OECS Secretariat along with staff members from the Regional Integration and Diaspora Unit.

A public discussion will also be held at the Methodist Church Hall on May 25, 2010.

The OECS was established on June 18, 1981, on the signing of the Treaty of Basseterre, in St.Kitts. Seven countries signed the treaty in 1981. They are: Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, St.Kitts and Nevis, St.Lucia and St.Vincent and the Grenadines.

To mark the significance of June 18, the new treaty will again be signed on this date.
