“This election is very important,” Burton Williams, former Minister of Health said as he addressed a meeting of the NDP at Buccament on Saturday, April 10.

According to Williams, it was Central Leeward, a former Labour party stronghold that “bowled the stumps” of the then governing Labour party over 25 years ago.

Herbert Young, who was the NDP candidate, lost the by-elections in 1983 by 63 votes to the Labour Party’s Valcina Ash, but returned the following year to win the constituency for the NDP in the general elections.

The by-election became necessary because of the death of Arthur T. Woods who held the seat for the ruling Labour Party.(DD)
