On December 5, 2009, CCA Limited commenced works on the second phase of the Union Island Airport rehabilitation project and within two weeks it was successfully completed. The project works consisted of placing armour stones (sea defence) at the east -end of the runway, as the shoreline had been damaged by a previous hurricane.{{more}}

The contract documents called for supply, delivery, and placement of approximately 1,350 cubic meters of boulders, ranging in size from 1/4 to 21/2 tonnes.

The company successfully managed to ferry the boulders via a barge that was able to handle over 1,000 tonne loads and heavy duty equipment. Three barge loads of boulders were carried to Union Island from Canouan Island.

The CCA Limited team of nine men along with the crew of Mr. Moses Arlene from Union Island diligently battled six to ten feet waves on a daily basis due to the fact that the east-end of the Union Island Airport runway is directly facing the fierce oncoming “Christmas winds”.

Union Island can now look forward to the tourist season and the many more to come in the future with high confidence in the quality of its airport facilities.
