The Grenadine island of Mayreau takes centre stage this year following the naming of one of its residents as the First Caribbean International Bank’s 2009 Unsung Hero.

The official announcement that John Roache was this year’s winner came at a dinner last Saturday evening at Government House.{{more}}

After a record 42 nominations, Roache was selected, thanks to his community service not only on Mayreau, but also the other Southern Grenadine islands.

Described as an educator, healthcare provider and mentor among his many accolades, Roache, also known as ‘Uncle John’, has been serving his community since he was a child.

The 45-year-old is the youngest finalist to date, but also the first male to be awarded the prestigious title.

As part of his award, Roache received the sum of US $6000, which goes towards the many causes he supports, including the Ella Roache Foundation, named after his mother, which he set up in 2006 to assist disadvantaged people on the island.

This award puts him among more than 15 other regional finalists vying to be named the Regional Unsung Hero, a title which brings with it and additional US$7,500.

At last Saturday’s dinner, local Unsung Hero Coordinator Aliethea Jackson lauded Roache for community work which she said was remarkable, given the scarcity of resources with which to perform his charitable acts.

“John Roache’s work is particularly honourable because of the obstacles he has to overcome.”

“He is a man who thinks outside the box, a man who makes things happen with little personal advancement, solely for the prosperity and advancement of his people and community.”

“He awoke a vision of hope, dedication, commitment and faith, and maintained the belief that any and everything is possible.”

First Caribbean Country Manager Radcliffe Nurse also congratulated Roache, as well as the Unsung Heroes Programme, which he said has cemented itself among regional communities as the standard bearer for volunteerism in the Caribbean.

“Here in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, the response to the programme continues to surpass all expectations. It is, therefore, refreshing to have an opportunity to highlight that which is good and honorable and to encourage individuals who give tirelessly of themselves everyday to continue with their good works.”

The regional Unsung Hero winner is set to be announced next month. The position is currently held by Veolant Cupid of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.(JJ)
