With the growing number of students pursuing higher level studies at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Open Campus in St Vincent and the Grenadines, more space is needed to accommodate them.{{more}}

So the staff of that educational institution came up with the idea to convert an unused spot between the library and one of its conference rooms into an additional class space.

At the opening ceremony on Tuesday, September 29, Senior Administrative Assistant Camille Lakhram said that the walls between the area were already there, so it was just a matter of utilizing the space. Lakhram said that the transformation clearly demonstrates that making small improvements can make a big difference.

Lakhram said the new facility, which was refurbished in just one week by Silas Hamilton, is equipped with improved lighting, two ceiling fans, a white board and lattice work screens to ensure proper ventilation. She noted that the lattice work is also an economical way to ensure that the area is kept cool, since no heavy air conditioning units are required.

The Senior Administrative Assistant also emphasized that the UWI Open Campus is concerned about the comfort of its students and that the new area can comfortably seat 15 learners.

Staff member Sylvanus Horne blessed the building, while Head of Open Campus Dr Adrian Fraser and student Sheron Garraway cut the ribbon.
