According to Deputy Director of Airport Joel Jack, the airport, which was constructed in 1994, has deteriorated over the years. There are loose stones, cavities and other forms of erosion on the runway. Jack said these have caused problems to aircraft, especially when landing. He said it is difficult to mobilize a hot mix plant on Union Island and so, the runway has not been repaved since construction.

Jack said the work to be undertaken includes, repair and complete resurfacing on the runway, taxiway and apron. Coastal protection work will also be done to protect the runway.

The work on the Union Island airport will be done by the C.C.A. Limited and is estimated to cost EC$5 million.
