The group, the brainchild of Vincentian Roxie Irish, was formed in 2003, when Irish discovered there was a need for medical supplies in local clinics in St. Vincent.

A total of seven boxes of medical supplies was handed over to seven clinics around the country at a ceremony at the Public Health Conference room on Wednesday, 15 April, 2009.

Speaking at the ceremony, Hospital Administrator Fitzroy Jones extended his gratitude on behalf of the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital to the UVCG on their efforts to assist the local clinics. Jones stated that St. Vincent and the Grenadines has many more challenges in the medical field when compared to larger countries. He noted that the Government alone cannot provide all the supplies needed, as the demand increases daily. Because of this, he said more collaboration has to take place between Government, corporate bodies and NGO’s (Non Governmental Organizations).

Also making similar remarks, Chief Nursing Officer Sister Audrey Gilkes applauded the UVCG on their contribution to their homeland. Gilkes, who mentioned the stress of the economic crisis, stated that even larger countries are struggling and need assistance. “They cannot go it alone… St. Vincent and the Grenadines, we cannot go it alone,” she said.

The group, headed by Roxie Irish, is made up of thirty persons, including children and adults. The group carries the philosophy that as Vincentians, caring for the elderly and children is their priority. They operate under the motto “We are blessed to be a blessing.”

The boxes of supplies were handed over to clinics at Layou, Vermont, Troumaca, Belair, Fancy, Sandy Bay and Mayreau in the Grenadines. The boxes contained basic medical supplies such as antiseptic lotion and soap, gauze, bandages and adult diapers. (OS)
