Held under the theme “Hat’s off to Reading, Celebrating the Gift”, the activities brought to a close, a week of competition, games and reading exercises last Friday, February 14.

Grade 5S had the audience bubbling with laughter from the time they hit the stage with their poem “The Principal is Missing”. While Grade 1J demonstrated the actions of the comma, full stop and question mark with their “Punctuation Song”.

The school’s Literacy Coordinator, Albena Jack, told the students that reading is a skill that will assist them in their educational development. She said the activities were designed to make reading interesting and fun. Jack informed the students that reading is the “cornerstone for your success in school and ultimately throughout life”.

Headteacher Orde Ballantyne believes the activities gave the students the opportunity to experience “reading for the joy and the comfort it brings”. He described some of the competitions as challenging but fun, and urged the students to continue to read.

Curriculum Support Officer in the Ministry of Education Carol Ross also gave brief remarks. “Hats Off to Reading” is an initiative by the Ministry of Education to promote reading in the primary schools. (VM)
