The farmers were issued the cards, which are a requirement of the recently passed Agricultural Produce and Livestock (Prevention of Theft) Act 2007. The Act, which is generally referred to as the Praedial Larceny Act, stipulates that all farmers conducting agricultural transactions must be duly registered and issued an Identification Card by August of this year.

The Minister indicated that so far, of the more than 7000 farmers targeted, 737 have applied and 525 have been approved. Of this, 165 have been processed and ready for distribution.

The registration process is still being done at the agricultural stations and will move to specific locations to accommodate some farmers. The exercise is being done by the staff of the Extension Services, guided through the Information Management and Development Division.
