Friends of Cuba mark special day


Members of Cabinet, the legal fraternity and Vincentians of various walks of life turned out in their numbers last week Friday to join with the Cuban community here in celebrating the 49th Anniversary of the Cuban Revolution.{{more}}

The Cuban nationals, along with the locals, assembled at the Peace Memorial Hall, where they commemorated and reflected on the January 1st 1959 revolution which was led by now President Fidel Castro, his brother Raul, Ernesto ‘Che’ Guevara and others, against the government of Fulgencio Batista.

Cuban Ambassador Olga Chamero Trias, addressing the gathering, thanked the Vincentian community for its solidarity and support over the years, and urged the country to continue its support, especially in the bid to have sanctions against her country lifted.

Also addressing those present were Acting Prime Minister Mike Browne and Minister of Culture René Baptiste.

Both ministers congratulated the Ambassador on the celebration of Cuba Day, and reaffirmed this country’s support for the Cuban Government.

Messages were also delivered to the Cuban Government from various organizations, including the Unity Labour Party, the Committee for the Liberation of the Five Cuban Heroes, The

National Workers’ Union, the Vincentian Cuban Student Association and the Public Service Union, represented by Senator Julian Francis, Parnel Campbell QC, Thornley Myers and Noel Jackson, among others. (JJ)
