Nelson Bloc set for massive launch

Using the parable of the early bird catching the worm, officials of the Nelson Bloc Cultural Organization have announced that they will be making an early start to celebrations of their 25th anniversary, with the focus on a worm of their own.{{more}}

In their case, the big fat worm takes the shape of Band of the Year.

At a press conference on Tuesday at the Chamber of Commerce conference room, executive members of the Cultural Organization and Digicel Nelson Bloc mas band revealed their plans to launch their 2008 presentation “Shanghai Nights” at an event billed as a launch with a difference.

The event takes place next Sunday, December 9, at the Cruise Ship terminal in Kingstown, and will feature a number of performances from Digicel Rhythmix Steel Orchestra, Avenues Dancers, addresses by dignitaries, and a showcase of next years’ costumes displayed by Mije models. The band, which has won nine Band of the Year awards, including two hat-tricks, is focused on recapturing the title which they last won in 2005.

The band got started in 1983 with the presentation ‘Extracts from a Chinese movie’.

Public Relations Officer Sean ‘Tana’ Brewster indicated that next week’s launch is just a part of the organization’s plans as they build up to Vincy Mas 2008.

Brewster said that a number of community visits are being planned, as well as an anniversary magazine in February, and a grand family day in April.

Also present at the press conference was Chief Executive Officer of the organization Kenneth Browne who said that much more can be expected in the near future.

Two weeks ago, the organization donated dictionaries to a number of primary and secondary schools, and has adopted the Bishop’s College Kingstown.

They have also assisted single mothers in the Paul’s Avenue community. (JJ)
