Final tune for local panman

Though he may be gone to the great beyond, the name of Andrew Leon “Trumpet” Johnson will be remembered by his family and loved ones for a long time.{{more}}

Johnson, a member of the Starlift Steel Orchestra since 1973 and Manager of Gonsalves Wines was laid to rest on Tuesday November 13.

Johnson was known for his involvement in pan and was the longest serving treasurer of his band from the late 1970s-1980s.

In delivering the homily at the St. Georges Cathedral, Dean Patrick McInstosh said he believes that one way that people can develop is through our own music, and pan is one of the gifts that we have been able to develop in the Caribbean.

“I look forward to hear good pan music in church. God has called us in the act of our expression in music,” he added.

“I believe that persons like Andrew have enriched our own Caribbean Civilization,” he said. “I hope that he would have found a way to communicate with the Lord,” McInstosh concluded.

Andrew survived by his three children and his common-law wife. He was laid to rest at the Kingstown Cemetery.(SB)
