The 20-year-old joined HMS Raleigh in March for eight weeks of intensive training to turn him from a civilian into a sailor.{{more}} The course is designed to be challenging, exciting, maritime in its focus and relevant to the operational environment individuals will find themselves in. It aims to develop individuals as part of a team and give them the basic skills they will rely upon throughout their Royal Navy career.

Samuel was presented with the Owens Cup at his passing out parade as the student who achieved the best overall marks during training. The former construction worker joined the Royal Navy for the career opportunities. He said: “This was one of the toughest experiences I’ve had. Training felt like being part of a family with everyone working together. It’s been brilliant and is something I really feel proud to build my career on.”

With the first phase of his training completed, Samuel will remain with HMS Raleigh for his professional training in the Defence Maritime Logistics School. Once fully qualified as a Logistician specialising in catering services, Samuel will be a member of a team that provides official hospitality services at sea or ashore. He will also be trained to carry out other key tasks necessary on a modern warship.

HMS Raleigh contributes to the operational capability of the Fleet by providing first class training to all ratings joining the Service, along with professional courses in a variety of specialist areas including military training, seamanship, logistics and submarine operations. HMS Raleigh also offers on-going training for existing Service personnel to hone their skills making them ready for the challenges of modern operations.
