CTAWU head calls for boycott of Food City

If the leadership of the Commercial Technical and Allied Workers Union (CTAWU) has their way, an all out boycott of Food City Supermarket and National Properties Limited should be in place.

The Union in a press release this week has called on its members, along with its industrial relations partners to avoid these institutions, for what it calls the management and board of directors’ disrespect for the union’s right to represent and bargain collectively for the workers employed with the two business places.{{more}}

The release further states that employees are not being paid double time for working on Sundays and public holidays, as well as time and a half for working past noon on Saturdays.

According to the release, both parties were supposed to meet in order to negotiate proposals put forward by the union over a year ago, but to date no effort has been made by National Properties to facilitate this meeting.

The union said that it is appalled by the lack of respect given to them by National Properties, which is owned by the Government of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Efforts by Searchlight to contact the management of Food City, located at Upper Bay Street, and National Properties whose main office is at Diamond Estate were futile.

The union hopes that the both parties could meet soon to resolve these issues, which also includes what the union calls the dismissal of workers contrary to the Protection of Employment Act.
