Pre-school and primary school education are the most important stages of a child’s development in the mind of Parliamentary representative for the Northern Grenadines, Dr Godwin Friday – that’s why he is disheartened when teachers leave the primary schools to go into the secondary school system or into administration.

Dr Friday said that contrary to the popular trend, he believes that the best and most talented teachers should be in the primary schools to shape the foundation of the students.{{more}}

He opined that the best teachers as not necessarily those with the degrees but teachers who are able to communicate with children and inspire them to learn.

“They need teachers not just to inspire them to remember what was taught but to go on to try to learn more, to build upon what they have learnt in the classrooms,” Dr Friday said.

Dr Friday said that there must be an effort to encourage teachers to work in areas that they are best suited and not just follow the normal aspiration to the “higher grounds” of the secondary school or administration.

He was at the time addressing the official site opening ceremony for the Bequia Anglican Primary School, which is being constructed at a cost of just over EC$6 million . The project is expected to take 18 months to be completed.
