Two nurses who are recovering from strokes were the recipients of surprise visits from executive members of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Nurses’ Association on Wednesday.

Led by President Sister Beverly Liverpool, the members journeyed to Glen to the home of Staff Nurse Evadney Layne where they presented her with a food basket, and spent the afternoon socializing with her.{{more}}

In March 2005, Nurse Layne, 43 years of age was diagnosed with Cardio Vascular Accident (CVA) after falling ill while on duty. Since then, she has been unable to speak and walk properly and is unable to work.

This is not the first time that the SVG Nurses’ Association is reaching out to Staff Nurse Layne. In 2005, the Nurses Association donated $3000 to assist with speech therapy expenses in Trinidad and Tobago. According to the PRO Sister Marius Duncan, this is in keeping with one of the objectives of the SVG Nurses Association for 2006 – 2007, to improve the economic and socio welfare of nurses in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Staff Nurse Layne was in a cheerful mood and her non-verbal expression revealed that she was very happy for the visit.

Staff Nurse Lucita Caesar, who is suffering from a similar condition, also received a surprise visit while working on the morning shift at the Lewis Punnett Home on 14th Feburary 2007.

She was presented with Valentine goodies. President of the SVG Nurses Association Sister Beverly Liverpool commended Staff Nurse Caesar for the contribution that she has made and is continuing to make to improve healthcare in SVG despite her condition.

A surprise visit was also made to other nurses at work on Valentines Day. They were presented with tokens of roses and other goodies from the SVG Nurses’ Association.

Other members of the executive making the visits were Treasurer, Sister Jillian Primus, Public Relations Officer, Sister Marius Duncan and Committee Member Jennifer Peterkin.
